Aerangis
Aerangis is a genus of epiphytic orchids belonging to the Orchidaceae family. These plants are native to the tropical regions of Africa, Madagascar, and surrounding islands, where they primarily thrive in high-humidity canopy habitats.
Cultivation requires specialized conditions that mimic their natural environment. The ideal climate includes high humidity levels, often ranging from 70% to 85%, and temperatures consistently maintained between 18 and 26 degrees Celsius to support healthy growth cycles.
Proper aeration is essential for this species, as Aerangis plants are highly sensitive to root suffocation. They are typically cultivated on bark mounts or in slatted baskets with minimal or no substrate, allowing the velamen-covered roots to breathe and absorb atmospheric moisture effectively.
Lighting should be bright but diffused, avoiding direct sunlight which can easily scorch the succulent leaves. Regular irrigation is necessary, ensuring the roots dry out slightly between waterings to prevent the development of root-borne pathogens.
Common health issues include fungal root rot and bacterial leaf spots, which are usually triggered by poor air circulation or over-saturation of the mounting media. Pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects frequently target these orchids, requiring consistent monitoring and integrated pest management strategies.
