The Proteaceae family comprises a vast group of evergreen shrubs and trees recognized for their exceptional diversity of inflorescences and high ornamental value. In an agricultural context, this crop is primarily known for the genus Protea, which serves as a commercially vital object in floriculture for the production of premium-grade cut flowers.
The native range of most species in this family is in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly the Cape region of South Africa and Australia. The cultivation area spans regions with a mild Mediterranean climate where the risk of heavy frost is minimal, as most representatives are highly sensitive to low temperatures and excessive soil moisture during the winter period.
Botanically, these plants possess tough, leathery leaves and a unique root system known as proteoid roots. These roots form dense clusters that allow the plant to efficiently absorb phosphorus even from extremely nutrient-poor, acidic soils. The flowers are arranged in large head-like inflorescences, often surrounded by brightly colored bracts that are frequently mistaken for the flower itself.
Cultivation requires strict adherence to irrigation regimes and soil composition. Proteaceae are extremely intolerant to high-phosphorus soils, as this can lead to phosphorus toxicity via the root system. They prefer well-drained, sandy, or rocky substrates with an acidic pH (between 5.0 and 6.0) and excellent aeration in the root zone to prevent decay.
Primary utilization includes commercial flower production for cut flowers and landscape design in warmer climatic zones. A significant challenge in cultivation is the management of root rot caused by Phytophthora fungi, as well as common pests like spider mites and mealybugs, which require diligent monitoring and professional integrated pest management practices.
