Beallara

Beallara is an intergeneric hybrid within the Orchidaceae family, bred from the genera Brassia, Cochlioda, Miltonia, and Odontoglossum. This complex ancestry results in highly ornamental flowers with distinct star-shaped features.

The culture thrives in temperate conditions, requiring daytime temperatures between +20°C and +24°C. A distinct nocturnal drop in temperature to +15°C to +17°C is essential to trigger the development of healthy flower spikes.

Appropriate lighting should be bright but indirect. Direct sunlight can easily scorch the foliage, so positioning the plant near east or west-facing windows is recommended for optimal growth and photosynthetic activity.

Watering protocols should involve allowing the substrate to dry halfway before the next irrigation. Maintaining high ambient humidity, ideally between 60% and 70%, is critical to prevent shriveling of the pseudobulbs.

The ideal substrate consists of a well-draining mixture of pine bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss. This combination ensures adequate aeration for the sensitive root system, preventing the common issue of suffocation and rot.

Root and bulb rot are the primary health threats, usually caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Ensuring the pot has sufficient holes and using a coarse bark mix are the best preventive measures.

Spider mites are common pests that flourish in low-humidity environments. They cause stippling and discolouration on the foliage; regular misting or using a humidifier helps in keeping them at bay.
