Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, the Canna plant has a wide distribution range. It requires plenty of sunlight and protection from strong winds to thrive. Because it is highly sensitive to frost, its cultivation in temperate climates requires careful management of the rhizomes during the winter season.

Botanically, Canna is distinguished by its thick, fleshy rhizomes, large elliptical leaves, and bright, asymmetrical flowers arranged in racemes or panicles. Depending on the variety, the stems can reach heights of up to 3 meters. This robust growth habit makes it an excellent candidate for biomass production alongside its ornamental utility.

Successful agronomy of Canna relies on deep, fertile, and well-drained soils. The plant is notably moisture-demanding during its active growth phase, yet it cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions. Regular fertilization with organic matter and balanced NPK fertilizers is essential to support the extensive vegetative growth and the development of the starchy rhizomes.

The industrial use of Canna is diverse and economically relevant. Beyond its primary role in landscaping, Canna (especially Canna edulis) is a source of high-quality, easily digestible starch.
