Cactaceae are a diverse family of perennial succulent plants known for their remarkable ability to thrive in arid and semi-arid environments. In modern agriculture, certain species from this family, such as those belonging to the genera Opuntia and Hylocereus, are cultivated on a commercial scale as valuable food and industrial crops.

Native to the Americas, Cactaceae have spread across various regions globally, particularly in Mediterranean climates, sub-tropical zones, and desert areas where water scarcity limits traditional farming. Their ability to produce high yields of fruit and biomass with minimal water input makes them a strategic crop for sustainable development in changing climatic conditions.

Botanically, these plants are defined by their specialized stems, which store water and perform photosynthesis, and areoles, which are modified buds. Their CAM-photosynthesis mechanism is a biological adaptation that allows them to fix carbon dioxide at night, significantly reducing water loss via transpiration during the day, making them highly efficient water users.

Agricultural requirements for Cactaceae focus on soil structure and drainage. They thrive in well-aerated, sandy, or rocky soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Over-irrigation is the most critical risk, as poor drainage frequently leads to root rot.
