Bitter sneezeweed

Bitter sneezeweed (Helenium amarum) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is known for its distinct bitter taste and pungent aroma, which are characteristic of its botanical profile.

The plant typically grows to a height of 20 to 60 centimeters. Its stem is upright and features numerous branches in the upper part, giving the plant a rounded, bushy appearance.

The leaves are very narrow, thread-like, or linear, and cover the stem densely, which gives the plant a delicate, almost ornamental look despite its status as a weed.

Its inflorescences are typical daisy-like heads with bright yellow ray florets that often droop downwards, surrounding a prominent, darker yellow central disc of tubular florets.

As an opportunistic annual, it possesses a strong taproot system that allows it to thrive in diverse soil conditions, ranging from nutrient-poor to relatively fertile environments.

Bitter sneezeweed favors open, sun-drenched locations. It is frequently observed growing along roadsides, in neglected pastures, wastelands, and fallow agricultural land.

In agricultural settings, it readily invades row crops, small grains, and hay fields. It often establishes itself on field margins before spreading into the cultivated areas.
