The Araceae family consists of monocotyledonous plants that, in specific agricultural contexts, can become troublesome weeds. While many species are ornamental, certain wild representatives are adapted to aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats, allowing them to invade agricultural fields, irrigation canals, and low-lying, poorly drained farmlands where they compete with crop plants.
These plants are primarily distributed in humid environments. They pose the greatest threat to wetland crops such as rice and forage grasses grown in moist meadows. By occupying large areas, they reduce the available space for desirable crops, utilizing significant quantities of water and nutrients, which ultimately leads to a reduction in both the quantity and quality of the harvest.
The biological success of Araceae species as weeds is largely attributed to their complex root systems and perennial growth habits. They possess strong rhizomes that facilitate survival through difficult periods. Their ability to regenerate from small rhizome fragments makes manual or mechanical removal difficult, as soil cultivation often spreads the weed instead of eliminating it.
The economic impact of these weeds is significant. In addition to direct yield loss, they interfere with harvesting machinery and can clog drainage systems. Furthermore, many species contain chemical compounds such as calcium oxalate crystals, which can be irritating or toxic if contaminated forage is consumed by livestock, thus impacting animal husbandry outcomes.
