Zostera (Zosteraceae), commonly known as seagrass, is a family of aquatic monocotyledonous plants. While ecologically important in marine ecosystems, in an agricultural context, it acts as an invasive or nuisance weed that clogs irrigation canals, drainage ditches, and water reservoirs serving farmland, particularly in coastal or brackish irrigation zones.

Botanically, Zostera is a perennial plant characterized by rhizomatous growth and long, ribbon-like leaves. Its biological success is driven by its ability to spread rapidly via vegetative fragments and seeds. These plants prefer sandy or muddy substrates and can tolerate varying levels of salinity, which allows them to colonize managed water infrastructure efficiently.

The primary agricultural impact of Zostera is the obstruction of water flow. Dense mats of this plant reduce the hydraulic capacity of irrigation channels, leading to sediment buildup and flooding risks. This reduces the consistency of water delivery to crops, negatively affecting yield, and significantly increases operational costs related to mechanical dredging and maintenance of pumping stations.

Mechanical control remains the primary method for managing Zostera infestations. This includes:

  • Regular mechanical cutting and dredging of irrigation channels.
  • Manual removal of weed biomass to prevent decay and water quality degradation.
  • Adjustment of water flow velocity to create less favorable conditions for root establishment.

Chemical control strategies are generally limited due to environmental regulations and the potential for residual toxicity in water used for crop irrigation. Any chemical intervention must be strictly monitored to prevent damage to surrounding fields or non-target aquatic organisms. Consequently, integrated management focusing on preventive maintenance and physical control is the most sustainable approach for agricultural operators.
