Common nettle

Common nettle (Urtica dioica) belongs to the Urticaceae family. It is a perennial herbaceous plant classified as a rhizomatous weed. In agronomic terms, it is considered a persistent and aggressive weed that can rapidly colonize vast agricultural areas if not managed properly.

This weed is found globally, particularly in fields, orchards, along fencerows, and on fallow land. It causes significant damage to perennial forage crops, vegetables, and berry plantations. Common nettle thrives in nitrogen-rich, moist soils, which often overlap with highly productive areas intended for high-value agricultural production.

The biology of the plant is defined by an extensive, spreading rhizome system that can reach depths of 15-20 cm. It reproduces both by seeds and vegetatively through rhizome fragments. The seeds can remain viable in the soil for several years, while fragmented rhizomes possess a high regeneration capacity even after standard cultivation practices.

The impact of common nettle on crops is primarily due to competition for water, nutrients, and sunlight. Due to its rapid development and dense canopy, it suppresses the growth of crops, which can lead to significant yield reductions. Furthermore, it serves as an alternative host for various pests and diseases that affect commercial crops.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes the following strategies:

  • Deep tillage with moldboard plowing to bury and exhaust the rhizome systems.
  • Consistent mowing or cutting of aerial parts to deplete energy reserves stored in the roots.
  • Application of systemic herbicides, such as glyphosate-based products, during fallow periods or post-harvest.
  • Implementation of robust crop rotation and timely inter-row cultivation to disturb established patches.
