Amaranthaceae

The Amaranthaceae family (Amaranthaceae), which often includes the Chenopodiaceae subfamily, comprises a large group of dicotyledonous plants. In an agronomic context, most members of this family are considered aggressive late-spring annual weeds, characterized by robust root systems and prolific seed production.

These weeds are found worldwide, infesting cereal crops, row crops, vegetable fields, and orchards. They cause significant damage in fields of corn, sunflowers, sugar beets, and soybeans, where they grow rapidly, outcompeting young crop plants for sunlight, moisture, and essential soil nutrients during early growth stages.

The biology of the family is defined by exceptional resilience. A single pigweed plant can produce up to half a million seeds, which remain viable in the soil for many years. Seeds germinate once the soil warms sufficiently, allowing the weeds to emerge continuously throughout the entire growing season.

The economic impact of Amaranthaceae weeds includes intense shading of crops and significant nutrient depletion, which drastically reduces crop yields and grain quality. Furthermore, these plants frequently act as alternate hosts for various dangerous agricultural diseases and pests.

Control measures require an integrated approach:
