Bigleaf maple, known as Acer macrophyllum, is a significant deciduous tree species within the Sapindaceae family. It is native to the Pacific Coast of North America and is renowned for having the largest leaves of any maple species.

The tree typically grows in areas with deep, moist, and well-drained soils. It thrives in regions characterized by cool, wet winters and warm, humid summers, making it an essential component of western North American riverine ecosystems.

Botanical traits include reaching heights of up to 30 meters, with broad, palmately lobed leaves that provide significant shade. The root system is deep and expansive, requiring adequate space and soil depth for optimal maturity.
