The Nippon maple (Acer nipponicum) is a deciduous tree or large shrub belonging to the Sapindaceae family. Native to the mountainous regions of Japan, this species has evolved to thrive in forest conditions, often favoring slopes with consistent moisture and rich, loamy soils.

Successful cultivation requires soil that is deep, well-drained, and rich in organic matter. While the tree prefers slightly acidic conditions, it is generally adaptable to neutral soils provided that waterlogging is prevented through an efficient drainage system at the planting site.
