This species thrives in well-drained soils, specifically those with a high content of limestone. It is highly intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root degradation, making the choice of planting site critical for its overall health and longevity.

The Leather maple prefers full sun exposure to maintain its dense foliage and unique leaf structure. It demonstrates remarkable adaptability to dry, Mediterranean climates where rainfall may be irregular during the summer growing season.
