The Szechuan maple (Acer sutchuense) is a rare deciduous species belonging to the Sapindaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Sichuan province, China. The species thrives in protected locations that provide partial shade or dappled sunlight. Given its high-altitude origin, it prefers temperate, cool climates with consistent moisture. Extreme heat and intense direct sunlight can stress the tree, so strategic positioning is essential for long-term health.
Soil requirements for the Szechuan maple include fertile, well-draining loams with a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Proper drainage is the most critical factor, as this maple cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions which often lead to root rot. Installing a gravel-based drainage layer is advised in heavy clay soils.

Like many Acer species, the Szechuan maple is susceptible to Verticillium wilt, a soil-borne fungal disease that attacks the vascular system. Prevention is key, which involves maintaining optimal soil health and avoiding damage to the root system during maintenance activities.
Pests such as aphids and scale insects can affect the tree's vitality during the growing season. Early detection through regular inspections of the underside of leaves and stems allows for the implementation of targeted treatments using insecticidal soaps or specific horticultural oils.
Sunscald is a significant threat to young specimens if they are moved from shade to full sun abruptly or if the trunk is not protected in hot climates. Applying a light-colored tree wrap can prevent bark damage and subsequent entry points for opportunistic pathogens.
Mites can become problematic during hot, dry spells, leading to foliage discoloration and premature leaf drop. Ensuring the tree is not under drought stress is the best way to maintain its natural resistance against these infestations.
