Willow (genus Salix) belongs to the Salicaceae family and comprises hundreds of species of deciduous trees and shrubs. It is globally recognized in agriculture as a highly efficient crop for short rotation coppice (SRC), primarily grown for renewable biomass, pulp production, and environmental protection services.
Native to the temperate and cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere, the willow is well-adapted to diverse climates. However, for commercial productivity, the plant requires moist, fertile soils. Its resilience to waterlogging and its ability to thrive in riparian zones make it an excellent choice for sites where other crops might fail.
The botanical architecture of the willow includes a fibrous and aggressive root system that aids in soil stabilization. The plants are characterized by rapid juvenile growth and the ability to sprout from the stump after harvesting. These physiological traits allow for multiple harvests from a single planting cycle lasting up to 20 years.
Successful cultivation requires site preparation to minimize weed pressure, as young willows are poor competitors. Soil testing is essential to ensure adequate pH levels, ideally ranging between 5.5 and 7.5. Fertilization regimes should be tailored to the expected biomass yield, focusing on nitrogen and phosphorus availability.
