Chalk maple (Acer leucoderme) is a deciduous tree species belonging to the Sapindaceae family. It is a smaller relative of the sugar maple, typically growing as a slow-growing understory tree in its native habitat.

The species is native to the southeastern United States, where it is commonly found on rocky slopes and calcareous outcrops. This evolutionary background explains its preference for rocky, well-drained soils and its ability to thrive in alkaline conditions.
