Cross-leaved paperbark (Melaleuca decussata) is a perennial shrub belonging to the Myrtaceae family, native to Australia. This plant is well-known for its distinctive mauve-colored flowers and evergreen foliage, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping.

The plant thrives in full sun exposure, which is essential for stimulating flower production and maintaining a dense growth habit. It is sensitive to severe frost and is best suited for warm temperate climates or as a container plant in colder regions.

Regarding soil, Melaleuca decussata performs best in well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. While it can adapt to various soil types, providing an organic mulch layer helps retain moisture while keeping the root system cool during extreme heat.

Botanically, the species is identified by its decussate leaf arrangement, where leaf pairs are set at right angles to the preceding pair. It is a hardy species once established, with moderate water requirements compared to other Australian native flora.
