Propineb belongs to the dithiocarbamate chemical class. It acts as a contact fungicide, creating a protective barrier on the plant surface that prevents fungal spores from penetrating the plant tissues.

The mechanism of action involves the non-specific inhibition of fungal enzymes. It effectively blocks the sulfhydryl groups of enzymes crucial for the pathogen's respiration and metabolism processes.

Due to its multi-site mode of action, Propineb has a low probability of inducing resistance in pathogens, making it a reliable tool for integrated resistance management programs.

The substance does not penetrate deeply into the plant, meaning its effectiveness depends heavily on uniform coverage during spraying. Repeated applications are necessary to protect new, growing plant tissues.

A notable feature of Propineb is the presence of zinc ions in its formulation, which are gradually released during decomposition, providing an additional nutritional and stimulating effect on plant development.
