Description

Mode of action

Fosetyl-aluminium is a systemic fungicide belonging to the phosphonate chemical group. Its most distinctive characteristic is its true systemic mobility, moving both acropetally and basipetally throughout the plant's vascular system.

The mode of action involves a direct impact on the metabolism of oomycete pathogens, specifically inhibiting mycelial growth and sporulation. By disrupting the fungal development process, it effectively halts the spread of infection.

Beyond direct toxicity, fosetyl-aluminium acts as a powerful inducer of Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR). It stimulates the plant's natural immune system, triggering the production of phytoalexins and proteins that strengthen the host against attack.

Due to its rapid penetration, the substance is absorbed by plant tissues within an hour, making it highly resistant to rain wash-off and ensuring reliable protection during unstable weather.

The systemic nature of this compound ensures that new growth occurring after the application is also protected, which is essential for rapidly developing crops like vines and vegetables.

What it targets

Fosetyl-aluminium is specifically designed to control Oomycetes, a group of organisms that includes some of the most destructive plant pathogens. It does not provide control against powdery mildew or other true fungi.

The primary targets include downy mildew (peronospora) on vegetables and vines, and late blight (Phytophthora) on potatoes and tomatoes. It is also used to treat various root and collar rots.

In orchards, it is a critical component for managing Phytophthora stem and root rots, effectively protecting the trunk and the root system of pome and stone fruits.

Ornamental and nursery growers utilize this fungicide to protect conifers and other sensitive nursery stock from root decay pathogens, particularly in high-humidity cultivation environments.

Rates and timing

Application rates generally vary from 1.5 to 3.0 kg per hectare depending on the crop, pressure of the disease, and the specific formulated product being used by the grower.

Timing is crucial: the fungicide is best applied as a preventive measure before infection occurs. Applications should coincide with the growth stages most vulnerable to oomycetes.

For viticulture, a program involving 2 to 3 applications during the growing season is standard, ensuring protection throughout the flowering and berry development phases.

Water quality is a factor in application efficiency. Growers should ensure that the pH of the water used for the solution is near neutral to maintain the stability of the active ingredient.

Always adhere to the specific instructions provided on the product label regarding spray volumes, as adequate coverage is necessary to ensure the systemic uptake by the plant tissues.

Restrictions

Fosetyl-aluminium must never be mixed with copper-based fungicides, as this combination can lead to severe phytotoxicity and negate the systemic effectiveness of the phosphonate.

Avoid mixing with nitrogen-containing fertilizers, as these may promote pathogen growth and diminish the fungicide's ability to trigger the plant's natural immune response.

Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during handling and application to prevent inhalation or contact with skin and eyes, following standard chemical safety protocols.

Pre-harvest intervals (PHI) must be strictly observed. Depending on the crop, the required waiting time ranges from 7 to 20 days to ensure chemical residues meet regulatory standards.

Store in original containers in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from children, pets, and feedstuffs, to maintain the chemical integrity of the product.
