Mode of action

Trichoderma gamsii strain ICC080 is a beneficial soil-borne fungus utilized as a biological control agent to protect crops from various phytopathogens. This strain is widely recognized for its high efficiency in establishing itself within the plant rhizosphere and surrounding soil.

The primary mechanism of action is mycoparasitism. The ICC080 strain actively detects target pathogens, coils around their hyphae, and secretes specific enzymes, including chitinases and glucanases. These enzymes degrade the cell walls of pathogenic fungi, effectively destroying them.

In addition to direct parasitism, the strain competes for essential resources. By rapidly colonizing the soil and root surfaces, it leaves little space and nutrients for harmful fungi to develop, effectively outcompeting them for survival.

The strain also induces Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) in plants. By interacting with the root system, it stimulates the plant's natural immune mechanisms, making the crop more resilient to abiotic stress and secondary pathogen infections.

Trichoderma gamsii ICC080 is versatile and maintains efficacy across various soil types and temperatures. Its robust growth characteristics make it an excellent tool for integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in diverse agricultural environments.

What it targets

Trichoderma gamsii ICC080 is specifically formulated to combat a wide range of soil-borne diseases. It is highly effective against root rot pathogens, including Fusarium spp., Verticillium spp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Pythium spp., which are common causes of crop failure.

The product provides significant protection against Botrytis cinerea, also known as gray mold. This is particularly beneficial for vegetable crops, berries, and ornamental plants, where Botrytis can devastate harvests during ripening and storage.

The strain is used for seed and seedling treatment to prevent "damping-off" disease. By creating a protective shield around the emerging roots, it ensures better stand establishment and uniform growth in the early stages of development.

Furthermore, it shows inhibitory activity against certain foliage pathogens, such as powdery mildew, when applied as a preventive spray to the aerial parts of the plants, extending the protective effect beyond the root zone.

By controlling these primary soil-borne infections, the product helps reduce the reliance on chemical pesticides, resulting in cleaner and safer agricultural output that meets modern food safety standards.

Rates and timing

Application rates for the ICC080 strain vary based on the specific crop, cultivation method, and the severity of the disease pressure in the field. It is suitable for soil drenching, spray applications to the root zone, and seed dressing.

For transplanting vegetables, it is recommended to apply the product directly into the planting holes. This ensures that the beneficial fungus immediately colonizes the rhizosphere, protecting the new root system from day one.

Preventive application schedules are vital. Depending on the crop cycle and environmental conditions, treatments are typically performed every 14 to 21 days to maintain a stable and active population of the Trichoderma fungus in the soil.

Application should ideally be performed when soil moisture is adequate. Water acts as a carrier and a necessary medium for the spores to germinate and for the mycelium to spread effectively throughout the soil matrix.

Crucially, the product must not be tank-mixed with systemic chemical fungicides. Chemical treatments designed to kill fungi will also eliminate the biological agent, rendering the application ineffective and wasting the biological control effort.

Restrictions

Compatibility with chemical programs is a major limitation. If intensive chemical fungicide use is required, a minimum interval of 10 to 14 days must be maintained between the application of chemical products and the biological agent to prevent cross-inhibition.

The efficacy of the strain can be hampered in extremely degraded or nutrient-poor soils. The beneficial fungus requires a certain level of organic matter to thrive and successfully compete against the native microbial population.

Environmental factors like extreme heat or UV radiation are detrimental. While the ICC080 strain is robust, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius can reduce the viability of the spores.

Proper storage is essential to maintain product potency. The product should be kept in a cool, dark place, following the manufacturer’s instructions, to ensure the viability of the fungal spores remains high until the time of application.

Although considered safe for humans, basic personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended when handling the product in large quantities, especially powders, to prevent inhalation of spores, which may cause minor respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals.
