Mode of action
Potassium iodide is an inorganic compound classified in agricultural practice as a broad-spectrum fungicide and antiseptic. Unlike systemic pesticides, it acts primarily through contact, providing rapid disinfection of tissue surfaces.
The mechanism of action relies on the oxidative properties of iodine released during the interaction between the compound and the organic components of microorganism cell walls. This leads to the denaturation of proteins and the disruption of fungal and bacterial enzymatic systems.
Potassium iodide-based products exhibit significant bactericidal and fungistatic activity. They are capable of inhibiting the germination of pathogenic fungal spores, thereby preventing the development of primary infection sites on vegetative plant parts.
A key feature of this compound is the lack of resistant pathogen strain formation, as the mechanism of destroying cellular structures is based on non-specific physical and chemical processes. This makes potassium iodide an effective component of anti-resistance protection programs.
In addition to direct effects on pathogens, iodine in small doses can stimulate the natural immune processes of plants, increasing their resistance to unfavorable abiotic environmental factors.

The main purpose of potassium iodide is to combat a complex of pathogens causing powdery mildew, septoria, bacterial infections, and various types of rots on vegetable, fruit, berry, and cereal crops.

Rates and timing
Application rates depend on the specific crop and the type of pathogen. Generally, low-concentration working solutions are used to avoid phytotoxicity, especially during the flowering period.
For pre-sowing seed treatment, soaking in solutions is applied, which allows for disinfecting the seed coat and protecting seedlings from soil-borne infections during early growth stages.
When spraying foliage, it is critical to ensure uniform coverage of the entire leaf surface. Treatments should be carried out in dry weather during morning or evening hours to minimize evaporation of the active substance.
The frequency of application is determined by phytosanitary conditions. Preventive spraying at 10–14 day intervals is usually conducted to maintain a high level of protection during critical plant development periods.
It is essential to strictly follow dosage regulations, as an excessive iodine content can cause burns to leaf blades and slow down growth processes in sensitive crops.
Restrictions
The main limitation is the high chemical activity of iodine, which can lead to tissue damage in young plants if concentrations are too high.
Treatments are not recommended during periods of intense solar radiation, as UV exposure accelerates the decomposition of the active substance and may contribute to unwanted photochemical burns.
Potassium iodide does not possess strong systemic activity, making it insufficiently effective against deep-seated, hidden infections located within the plant's vascular system.
Mixing with copper-containing products or strong alkaline agents should be avoided to prevent chemical degradation of the active substance and loss of working solution efficacy.
Personal protective equipment must be used during handling. The substance has an irritating effect on mucous membranes, so safety protocols must be followed strictly when preparing solutions.
