Mode of action

Benthaluron is a chemical compound belonging to the urea derivative class. Its primary mechanism of action involves inhibiting the process of photosynthesis in susceptible plants.

The active ingredient is absorbed by weeds primarily through the root system, after which it translocates through the xylem to the leaves. There, it blocks electron transport in photosystem II, leading to the cessation of essential metabolic processes.

As a result of these disrupted biochemical pathways, toxic metabolites accumulate in weed tissues. This leads to progressive chlorosis, growth arrest, and the eventual death of the plant.

The efficacy of the compound largely depends on soil moisture availability, as the active ingredient relies on the soil solution to reach the roots. In dry conditions, absorption rates are significantly lower, which slows the herbicidal effect.

Benthaluron is considered selective for crops, as these plants possess the ability to metabolize (break down) the substance into non-toxic compounds, ensuring field protection without causing damage to the yield.

What it targets

Benthaluron is designed for the control of a broad spectrum of annual broad-leaved and certain grass weeds emerging from seeds.

It effectively suppresses common weed species such as Chenopodium album, various Amaranthus species, Capsella bursa-pastoris, and Sinapis arvensis. It also shows activity against certain thistle species at early growth stages.

The main application of this substance focuses on technical and cereal crops, where field cleanliness is critical during the active tillering period or the emergence of the first true leaves.

The product can be used in tank mixtures to broaden the spectrum of action, allowing for the control of weeds that may exhibit resistance to other herbicide classes.

Optimal application timing is determined by the weed development stage. The best results are achieved when spraying is conducted at the cotyledon stage or the first two true leaves, when weeds are most susceptible.

When used as part of integrated crop protection systems, it is essential to strictly follow the manufacturer's guidelines specified in the label instructions for the specific product formulation.

The spray volume should ensure uniform coverage of the soil surface, allowing the active ingredient to distribute properly in the top layer where weed seed germination occurs.
