Larger grain borer

The Larger Grain Borer, scientifically known as Dinoderus, is a small beetle belonging to the Bostrichidae family. Adult beetles typically measure between 2.5 and 3.5 mm in length.

Their body has a characteristic cylindrical shape with a dark brown or black coloration. The head is hidden beneath the hood-like pronotum, which is a key diagnostic feature for identification.

The surface of the elytra is covered with fine punctures organized in longitudinal rows. These features give the insect a rough texture, which helps distinguish it from other similar store pests.

Larvae of this species are C-shaped, white in color, and have a well-developed head capsule. They are specifically adapted to boring into hard plant tissues.

Adults are strong fliers and are highly mobile, which allows them to easily infest new storage facilities, grain silos, and household food supplies.

This pest primarily attacks dry plant materials that are high in starch. It is notorious for being a major threat to stored grain and dried root crops like cassava.

It readily infests wheat, corn, rice, and sorghum. Beyond grains, it has been known to bore into wood, bamboo, and various stored dried agricultural commodities.

The damage is caused primarily by both adults and larvae boring into the grains, creating extensive tunnel systems that destroy the internal structure of the produce.

Infestations lead to massive losses in grain weight and nutritional quality. The debris produced during the boring process renders the grain unfit for human consumption.

In addition to direct consumption, the pest makes the grain highly susceptible to secondary attacks by fungi and other microorganisms due to the moisture created by boring activities.

The Larger Grain Borer is a thermophilic pest that thrives in warm and humid environments. It is most active during the warmer months of the year.

Optimum development occurs at temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. Under these conditions, the life cycle from egg to adult is completed quite rapidly.

In colder regions, the pest is generally restricted to climate-controlled storage areas or warehouses, as low temperatures significantly inhibit its reproductive capability.

Although activity decreases in winter, the beetles can survive in protected niches within grain masses, waiting for the return of warmer conditions to resume feeding and breeding.

Multiple generations can occur annually if environmental conditions in storage facilities remain consistently warm, leading to rapid population explosions.

A primary indicator of infestation is the accumulation of fine, flour-like dust on the surface of stored grain, which is the byproduct of the beetle's boring activity.
