These beetles infest a variety of stored goods, ranging from raw cereal grains like wheat, barley, and corn, to processed items such as flour, bran, and various dry food stocks. Because they are often found in grain processing plants and grain elevators, they pose a significant threat to global food security by contaminating large volumes of product during transport and storage.

The biology of Cucujidae is highly adaptable to the environment of grain bins. They develop through a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Their ability to breed in various climates, combined with their preference for the dust and debris that naturally accumulates in storage areas, allows their populations to thrive even when grain moisture levels are relatively low.
