How to identify
The grape borer (Amphicerus anobioides) belongs to the Bostrichidae family within the Coleoptera order. These beetles are characterized by a cylindrical body shape and a pronotum that covers the head like a hood, which is the main diagnostic feature of the species.
Adult beetles typically range from 6 to 9 mm in length and exhibit a dark brown to black coloration. Their elytra are covered with fine punctures, giving them a matte and rough texture, especially towards the posterior end.
Larvae are white, C-shaped, and equipped with strong mandibles for burrowing into woody tissues. They remain hidden deep within the stems of the host plant throughout their development, making detection difficult.
The life cycle of the grape borer is closely tied to the physiological state of the host. The pest prefers older, woody sections of vines, which provide sufficient structural material for larval development.
As wood-boring insects, these beetles are specialized for inhabiting dense materials, where they can complete their life cycle safely protected from external environment and many predators.
What it damages
The grape borer primary feeds on the lignified parts of grapevines, including main trunks and mature canes. Adult beetles and larvae create galleries within the wood, which severely compromises the structural integrity of the plant.
In addition to grapes, this pest has a broad host range, occasionally attacking fruit trees such as figs, walnuts, and various deciduous trees, making it a significant threat to diverse orchards.
The primary damage is caused by the disruption of xylem vessels, which hinders the transport of water and nutrients. This results in the weakening of the entire vine, leading to reduced vigor and poor foliage development.
Severe infestations in young vineyards can cause the death of the plant, especially if the borer attacks the main trunk near the soil surface or the graft union.
The galleries created by the larvae also serve as entry points for secondary fungal infections, which further accelerate the decline of the plant and reduce the lifespan of the vineyard.
Signs of infestation
The most reliable sign of an infestation is the presence of small, perfectly round entrance holes, approximately 2–3 mm in diameter, found on the bark of trunks or mature branches.
Below these holes, one might observe small piles of frass, or "wood flour," which is the byproduct of the beetle's tunneling activities. This debris is often seen accumulating in the crevices of the bark or on the ground.
During the growing season, infested canes may show signs of sudden wilting or yellowing of leaves. This occurs because the internal damage limits the vine's ability to supply the necessary water to the canopy.
Upon physical inspection, affected branches often appear brittle and may break easily under mechanical stress, such as strong winds or during regular canopy management tasks.

Control measures
Sanitation is the most critical component of control. All severely infested branches should be pruned out and burned immediately to destroy the larvae currently residing inside the wood.
Maintaining optimal vine health through proper irrigation and nutrition is essential. Strong, vigorous vines are better able to recover from minor pest damage compared to stressed or malnourished ones.
In cases of significant population pressure, systemic insecticides can be applied. These products are absorbed into the plant tissue and target the adult beetles as they attempt to burrow into the vine.
It is important to remove all old vine prunings, dead stumps, and woody debris from the vineyard site, as these materials can serve as breeding grounds for the borer population.
Regular monitoring of the vineyard, especially following harsh winters or extreme drought, is necessary to catch infestations early and prevent the pest from spreading throughout the planting.
