How to identify

The chestnut borer is a member of the family Bostrichidae, commonly known as auger beetles or powderpost beetles, within the order Coleoptera.

Adult beetles are relatively small, typically measuring 3 to 5 mm in length, and possess a distinctively cylindrical, dark-brown or black body.

Their most defining physical characteristic is the pronotum, which is curved downward like a hood, completely concealing the head from above.

The larvae are typically creamy-white, C-shaped, and relatively immobile, with robust mandibles adapted for boring through solid wood tissues.

Distinguishing this species requires careful examination of the elytra texture and thoracic structure, as many bostrichids share a similar morphological appearance.

What it damages

This pest primarily attacks various deciduous trees, including chestnut species, as well as several fruit and ornamental trees that are under environmental stress.

Adults and larvae create complex galleries deep within the sapwood, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, eventually leading to branch dieback.

Severe infestations can compromise the structural integrity of a tree, causing significant dieback or even total mortality if the vascular tissue is extensively girdled.

When it appears

Depending on the climatic zone, the borer may produce one or more generations per year, creating a continuous threat to susceptible plantations.

Mass emergence events are the key period for monitoring, as this is when the adult beetles are most active and visible on the surface of the bark.

The larvae typically overwinter inside the wood galleries, allowing the species to survive harsh winter conditions and resume activity as soon as the season allows.

Signs of infestation

The most visible symptom of an infestation is the presence of small, perfectly round emergence holes, typically 1–2 mm in diameter, on the surface of the bark.

Frass, or fine wood powder, is often found in small piles at the base of the tree or caught in crevices on the bark, indicating active larval boring.

Canopy thinning, leaf yellowing, or the sudden wilting of individual branches often indicate that the beetle galleries have severed the tree's vascular system.

Peeling back the bark in suspected areas reveals the extensive, frass-filled tunnel network characteristic of bostrichid beetle feeding activity.

  • Piles of fine wood dust (frass) at the base.
  • Dieback of terminal shoots and branches.
  • Loss of overall plant vigor and health.

Control measures

Sanitation is the most effective management tool: pruning and destroying infested limbs is crucial to reduce the local population of the pest.

Maintaining vigorous tree health through proper irrigation, fertilization, and site management helps trees resist initial colonization attempts.

Chemical control using systemic or contact insecticides can be applied during the adult flight period to prevent new galleries from being initiated.

Pheromone traps are highly recommended for monitoring purposes to pinpoint exact timing for insecticide applications based on local flight patterns.

Preventative trunk wraps or protective coatings are sometimes used in high-value ornamental settings to discourage adults from landing and boring into the bark.
