Rove beetles

The biology of these insects is characterized by short elytra that leave most of the abdomen exposed. Their life cycle includes the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults are highly mobile and typically nocturnal, preferring moist environments and soils rich in organic matter.

The pest status of rove beetles usually manifests when their natural food sources are scarce. They have been observed feeding on the sprouts of cereals, vegetable crops, and root vegetables. Damage typically involves gnawing on cotyledons, young leaves, or the root collar, leading to wilting and seedling mortality.

The nature of the damage is often secondary, as beetles tend to target plants already weakened by other stressors or pathogens. However, in intensive farming systems, their feeding on succulent plant parts can introduce secondary infections and soft rots, significantly reducing crop stand density.

Protection strategies involve an integrated approach, including agronomic practices like proper incorporation of crop residues, strict crop rotation, and high-quality soil cultivation. In cases of severe infestation, the application of soil insecticides or seed treatments is recommended to protect young plants during their most vulnerable growth stages.
