How to identify
Tetrapriocera belongs to the family Bostrichidae, commonly known as auger beetles or false powderpost beetles. These insects are specialized wood-borers characterized by their cylindrical bodies and hood-like pronotum covering the head.
Adult beetles are typically dark brown or black. The pronotum often features prominent teeth or ridges, which they use to anchor themselves while burrowing into hard wood or stems.
The larvae are typically C-shaped, fleshy, and white with well-developed mandibles. They spend their entire developmental period inside the wood, feeding on cellulose and lignin.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, where the length of development is highly dependent on environmental conditions and the moisture content of the infested material.
Due to their cryptic habits, these beetles are often not detected until the emergence of adults creates visible holes, making early prevention and monitoring essential.
What it damages
This pest primarily attacks hardwoods, including various fruit trees and timber used in construction. It prefers wood that is stressed, dying, or recently cut but not yet dried.
In orchards, Tetrapriocera can bore into the stems and branches of trees that have been weakened by drought, disease, or improper pruning, ultimately causing branch dieback.
The internal galleries created by larvae can severely compromise the structural integrity of the wood, leading to widespread tissue necrosis and potential tree failure in extreme cases.
In the timber industry, this pest causes significant economic losses by boring into stored wood products, significantly reducing their quality and commercial value.
The exit holes and internal tunnels act as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which further exacerbate the decomposition process of the wood.
Signs of infestation
The most common sign of an active infestation is the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface of the bark or timber, typically 1 to 3 mm in diameter.
A fine, powdery dust, often called frass, is frequently found around the exit holes or falling onto the ground below, signaling that larvae are actively feeding inside.
Visible wilting of foliage or drying of individual branches is a secondary symptom, indicating that the vascular system of the tree has been damaged by the tunneling activity.
Bark abnormalities, such as shallow depressions or cracks, often hide the initial entry points where the female beetle deposited her eggs.
If a cross-section of the wood is examined, one can observe complex, often chaotic networks of tunnels filled with wood debris and larvae excrement.
Control measures
Sanitation is the most effective cultural control method. All dead, dying, or infested branches should be pruned and destroyed immediately to eliminate breeding grounds.
Maintaining optimal tree health through regular irrigation, fertilization, and proper pruning helps trees develop a better defensive response against boring pests.
Chemical control involving systemic insecticides can be applied to trunks and branches during the adult beetle emergence period to prevent new infestations.
For timber stored in warehouses, fumigation is the standard procedure to ensure complete eradication of all developmental stages of the pest.
