How to identify

Micrapate xyloperthoides is a species of auger beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are typically cylindrical in shape, ranging from 4 to 7 millimeters in length.

The coloration of these beetles is usually dark brown to black. They possess a characteristic hooded pronotum that obscures the head, a common feature for the Bostrichidae family.

The larvae are typically C-shaped, fleshy, and white to yellowish in color. They feature robust, highly developed mandibles specifically adapted for boring into seasoned or sometimes even green timber.

The life cycle encompasses egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Pupation takes place within the galleries constructed by the larvae inside the host wood.

These insects are well-adapted to surviving in dry, dense wood environments, often making them difficult to detect until significant structural damage has already occurred.

What it damages

This pest primarily infests weakened, stressed, or dead trees, as well as improperly stored timber and seasoned lumber products in various warehouse environments.

The larvae are responsible for the most severe damage, as they burrow deep into the wood, creating extensive internal networks of tunnels that destroy the integrity of the timber.

In the timber industry, infestation by this beetle results in substantial economic loss, as affected lumber loses its structural strength and visual quality for woodworking.

The beetle can also affect ornamental and orchard trees if they are already compromised by other environmental stressors, diseases, or mechanical injuries.

Due to their ability to survive in processed wood, they are frequently transported internationally via wooden shipping crates, making them a significant biosecurity concern.

Signs of infestation

The most distinctive sign of an infestation is the presence of small, perfectly circular emergence holes, approximately 1–2 mm in diameter, found on the wood surface.

Accumulation of fine, powdery wood dust (frass) near the holes or at the base of infested timber is a strong indicator of active larval boring inside the material.

Internal damage manifests as complex, interconnected tunnels that may be packed with bore dust, weakening the timber until it becomes brittle or crumbly.

On living trees, persistent infestation may lead to localized dieback, yellowing foliage, or even tree death if the trunk’s vascular system is sufficiently compromised.

The sound of active feeding can occasionally be detected in quiet environments, which can help in early identification before external signs become highly obvious.

Control measures

Effective management begins with strict phytosanitary measures, including the mandatory heat treatment or fumigation of wood products before international shipment.

Warehouse hygiene is critical; this involves regular inspection of timber stocks and the prompt removal and disposal of any wood showing signs of infestation to prevent spread.

Chemical control involving the application of contact or systemic insecticides to timber surfaces can provide a protective barrier, discouraging female beetles from laying eggs.

Debarking logs immediately after harvesting is a recommended forestry practice, as many wood-boring species prefer to initiate their attack through the protective bark layer.

In nursery and orchard management, maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation reduces the susceptibility of plants to attack by these wood-boring pests.
