The mango borer (Sinoxylon mangiferae) is a species of beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae, often referred to as auger beetles or false powderpost beetles.
Adult beetles are typically small, cylindrical, and dark brown or black in color. Their most distinct morphological feature is the pronotum, which is covered with tubercles and forms a hood-like structure over the head.
The larvae are C-shaped, legless grubs that are whitish in color. They reside exclusively within the wood tissue, making them difficult to detect until significant structural damage has already occurred.
This beetle is highly specialized in boring into wood. Their mandibles are powerful enough to penetrate even the dense hardwood of mature fruit trees, which is essential for their development.
Identification is often confirmed by examining the characteristic boreholes and the texture of the frass (the waste material produced by larvae) found at the base of the tree or near the exit holes.
What it damages
While the beetle is named for its affinity for mango trees, it is a polyphagous pest capable of infesting various fruit and ornamental trees including citrus, acacia, and other tropical species.
Damage is primarily caused by both adults and larvae boring extensive galleries inside the trunk and branches. These tunnels disrupt the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients.
As the infestation progresses, the tree's health declines rapidly. Symptoms include dieback of individual branches, wilting foliage, and eventually the death of the entire tree if the infestation is severe.
The structural integrity of the tree is significantly compromised, making branches prone to snapping during high winds or heavy fruiting periods, leading to substantial economic loss.
Furthermore, the tunnels serve as entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which cause internal rot and further accelerate the decline of the host tree.
When it appears

Adult beetles are highly active during dry seasons. This is when they emerge from the wood to mate and locate new host trees, which are often stressed by drought or malnutrition.
The developmental cycle from egg to adult takes several months, depending on the ambient temperature and the moisture content of the wood. Higher temperatures generally accelerate the metamorphosis.
Peak emergence periods are critical for farmers to monitor, as this is when the beetles are most exposed and susceptible to preventative pesticide applications.
Understanding the life cycle is vital for timing control measures. Proper management must align with these activity peaks to reduce the success rate of new infestations.
Signs of infestation
The most visible sign of an infestation is the presence of small, circular holes (1–2 mm in diameter) on the bark, indicating where beetles have entered or exited the tree.
Frass, which resembles fine wood sawdust, accumulates in small piles near the base of the tree or on the surface of branches, signaling active boring activity.
Trees may exhibit signs of stress, such as yellowing leaves and reduced fruit production, long before the structural damage becomes visible to the casual observer.
In advanced cases, one may notice dead twigs or branches that break off easily, revealing the intricate network of galleries and the presence of larvae inside.
Bark surface might show signs of cracking or sunken areas where the galleries are located immediately underneath, indicating long-term infestation by the beetles.
Control measures
The cornerstone of management is sanitation. Infected branches and dead trees must be removed and destroyed by burning to eliminate the beetle population and prevent further spread.
Maintaining high tree health through proper fertilization, irrigation, and pruning makes trees less attractive to the pests, as they prefer to attack weakened hosts.
Chemical control can be effective if applied during the emergence of adult beetles. Systemic insecticides can be used to treat trunks and branches to protect them from infestation.
