These beetles are generally dark brown to black in color, with a robust morphology adapted for boring into hardened plant tissues, particularly wood and branches of varying density.

The larvae are C-shaped, off-white in color, and feature strong, well-developed mandibles. They spend their entire developmental period hidden inside wood, consuming it to grow and pupate within the galleries they construct.

Taxonomically, they are part of the order Coleoptera. While many species prefer dying wood, the genus Xyloperthodes is noted for its ability to affect structural timber and living trees that are under stress.
