The lesser auger beetle (Bostrychopsis parallela) belongs to the family Bostrichidae within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are characterized by their cylindrical shape, usually measuring between 5 and 10 millimeters in length.

The insect’s coloration ranges from dark brown to almost black, which aids in camouflage against tree bark. A distinct feature of this family is the pronotum, which hood-like covers the head, giving the group its common name "auger beetle".

The elytra of the beetle feature longitudinal rows of fine punctures, providing texture to the body. These insects possess well-developed mandibles, evolved to tunnel through dense wood, including that of dried or weakened plants.

The larvae are typical of wood-borers: they are white, C-shaped, with a prominent head and powerful mouthparts. Larval development occurs deep within the wood, making them difficult to detect during early infestation stages.

Mature females lay eggs in bark crevices or self-drilled holes in the wood. The beetle's entire biology is intrinsically linked to the availability of accessible cellulose, which serves as the primary food source for the larvae.

What it damages

The primary hosts for this species are woody plants, including both deciduous and coniferous trees. The pest poses a significant threat to orchards, where it damages trunks and thick branches of stressed or neglected trees.

Beyond horticultural crops, the beetle is often found in forest stands, favoring areas with damaged bark integrity. It is capable of colonizing freshly cut timber, posing a risk to lumber yards and wooden structures.

Damage is caused by both adults, which bore entry holes into the wood, and larvae, which create labyrinthine galleries. Larval feeding disrupts the vascular system, preventing proper water and nutrient transport throughout the tree.

During massive outbreaks, these beetles can cause critical structural damage, leading to the wilting of specific branches or the death of entire trees. Weakened trees often become secondary targets for other pests and pathogenic fungi.

The severity of the damage is directly related to the physiological state of the host: specimens stressed by drought, disease, or physical damage are the most susceptible to infestation.

Signs of infestation

The first and most visible sign of infestation is the appearance of small, circular holes, approximately 2–3 millimeters in diameter, on trunks or large branches. These are the entry points created by the beetles.

Surrounding these entry holes, one can often observe fine frass (wood dust) accumulating on the bark or the ground. The color and texture of this frass vary depending on the wood species and the depth of the galleries.

Upon heavy infestation, the internal structure of the wood becomes riddled with holes, severely compromising its integrity. In quiet conditions, one may even hear the sound of larvae feeding within the timber.

General plant decline manifests as premature yellowing or leaf drop. Heavily damaged branches are prone to breaking under their own weight or during high wind events.

If a portion of the bark is peeled away, one can see complex, chaotic tunnels filled with larval excrement and wood residue, confirming the active presence of the pest within the wood matrix.

Control measures

The cornerstone of protection is timely sanitary logging and the disposal of heavily infested trees, which serve as breeding reservoirs for the pest. It is crucial to remove dead branches and timber stacks from the orchard.

To prevent colonization, maintaining high tree vigor is essential: regular irrigation, proper fertilization, and disease management reduce the risk of infestation. Healthy trees utilize natural defenses, such as resin or sap exudation, to repel invaders.

The use of contact insecticides is advisable during the peak flight period of the beetles, which usually occurs in spring and summer. Applications should target the trunk and main scaffold branches to kill adults before egg-laying begins.

Pheromone traps allow for the monitoring of population numbers and the precise timing of chemical treatments. This is an environmentally friendly approach that reduces the overall pesticide burden in the habitat.

For high-value ornamental trees, systemic trunk injections can be used. This method targets larvae directly within the wood, providing effective control while minimizing impact on beneficial insect populations.
