The Common auger beetle (Heterobostrychus pileatus) is a member of the Bostrichidae family within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are cylindrical in shape, typically ranging from 7 to 12 mm in length, with a dark brown to black coloration.
The pronotum is heavily developed and extended forward, concealing the head and forming a hood-like structure, which gives the family its name. This pronotum is usually textured with small tubercles, becoming more pronounced as spikes towards the front.
The elytra (wing covers) display distinct rows of punctures, and the posterior slope is equipped with specific spines or protuberances that vary between males and females. Larvae are typically C-shaped, fleshy, and cream-colored, adapted for boring into timber.
Because the life cycle occurs entirely within the wood, detecting the presence of these beetles at an early stage is notoriously difficult. The adults are nocturnal, which further complicates visual detection in warehouse or field environments.
Proper identification often requires professional examination of the pronotal structure and the arrangement of spines on the elytra, ensuring it is differentiated from other similar species within the Bostrichidae family.

While hardwoods are preferred, the pest can adapt to a variety of wood types in indoor environments. Infestations are often persistent, as multiple generations can emerge and re-infest the same piece of timber until it is completely destroyed.

Signs of infestation
The most prominent sign of an infestation is the appearance of small, perfectly round emergence holes, usually 2–3 mm in diameter, on the surface of the wood. These are created by adults as they emerge from their pupal chambers.
Underneath infested wood, one can often find piles of fine, powdery wood dust known as frass. This material is expelled from the galleries by larvae as they feed and expand their tunnels within the wood.
Structural damage can often be identified by tapping the wood, which will produce a hollow sound, indicating internal galleries. Severely infested wood may buckle or snap easily under light pressure due to the extensive internal tunneling.
In quiet environments, it is sometimes possible to hear a faint scratching or rasping sound. This is caused by the larvae feeding on the wood fibers, which is most noticeable during the quieter night hours.
If emergence holes are observed, a comprehensive inspection of all nearby wooden items is essential. Since the beetle is highly mobile, infestations can quickly spread from a single piece of infested furniture to the surrounding environment.
Control measures
Strict adherence to phytosanitary regulations is the primary defense against the spread of this beetle. Imports of timber must be inspected, and mandatory fumigation or certification of heat treatment is required to ensure no live stages remain.
Industrial heat treatment, which subjects the wood to high temperatures for a specified duration, is the most effective method for eradicating all life stages of the pest. This process is crucial for preventing the introduction of the beetle into new regions.
For infested items like furniture, professional injection of insecticide formulations directly into the emergence holes can be effective. After treatment, sealing these holes with wax or filler helps prevent further moisture entry and re-infestation.
Fumigation of entire structures or storage rooms using specialized gases may be necessary for large-scale or deep-seated infestations. Such procedures must only be performed by licensed pest control professionals under controlled conditions.
Preventative maintenance includes the application of protective finishes, such as paints or varnishes, which make the wood surface less attractive to females for egg-laying. Maintaining clean storage facilities free of bark and wood debris is also a vital control practice.
