Leaf-rolling weevils belong to the family Attelabidae (order Coleoptera). These beetles are well-known for the female's habit of cutting and rolling leaves into cigar-shaped structures. These rolls serve as both a food source and a protective chamber for the larvae. Leaf-rolling weevils

These pests primarily target deciduous fruit trees, including apple, pear, plum, and cherry, as well as nut trees and occasionally vines. The adult weevils damage the host plant by feeding on buds, young leaves, and tender shoots, while the larvae feed inside the rolled leaf tissue or within ripening fruits, depending on the specific species involved.

The life cycle of leaf-rolling weevils is strictly synchronized with the phenology of their host plants. Most species overwinter as adults in the soil or protected leaf litter. In the spring, they emerge to feed on developing foliage and begin their egg-laying process. The larvae typically develop within the rolled leaf structure before dropping to the ground to pupate in the soil, completing the cycle.

The damage caused by these insects is two-fold: direct tissue consumption and structural disruption. The loss of leaf surface area inhibits photosynthesis, causing stress to the tree, while the infestation of fruits leads to premature fruit drop, rotting, and severe economic losses. Heavy infestations can significantly reduce the overall health and productivity of an orchard.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to control these weevils include:

  • Sanitation: Removing and destroying fallen leaves and infested fruits to disrupt the larval development phase.
  • Cultivation: Tilling or disturbing the soil beneath tree canopies to destroy overwintering or pupating stages.
  • Physical Barriers: Applying sticky bands to the trunk to prevent adults from climbing into the canopy.
  • Chemical Control: Applying registered insecticides during key emergence periods, such as bud break and post-bloom.
  • Monitoring: Using visual inspections to detect early leaf-rolling activity for timely intervention.
