The biology of Lymexylidae is fascinating yet destructive. Unlike many other wood-boring beetles, the larvae do not feed on wood fibers themselves. Instead, they rely on ambrosia fungi, which the adult females inoculate into the wood during egg-laying. The larvae then graze on this fungal growth within the gallery system they create.

The life cycle is primarily hidden within the tree trunk. The tunneling process creates extensive systems of deep galleries that can significantly degrade the structural integrity of the wood. Because they are attracted to stressed trees, their presence often indicates an underlying health issue within the forest stand.
