Affected crops. These beetles primarily infest commercially grown mushrooms, such as Agaricus (button mushrooms) and Pleurotus (oyster mushrooms). In agricultural contexts, they are occasionally observed damaging seeds or plant materials that have been weakened or compromised by mold fungi, as the beetles are attracted to fungal growth.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in moist substrates or directly on the surface of fungi. Larvae are the primary feeding stage, characterized by rapid growth as they consume mycelium and fungal tissue, thriving in the warm and humid environments found in commercial cultivation facilities.

Damage and economic impact. The damage is characterized by internal tunneling within mushroom fruiting bodies, which causes rapid tissue breakdown and decay. This renders the crop commercially valueless. Furthermore, the presence of these beetles often introduces secondary pathogens and bacteria that accelerate the spoilage of the harvested product.

Control measures. Management is heavily reliant on sanitary practices. Implementing strict hygiene protocols, such as pasteurization of substrates and thorough cleaning between mushroom production cycles, is essential. Monitoring with light traps and ensuring optimal airflow helps to keep populations below economic thresholds. Chemical control must be handled with extreme care to avoid contaminating edible products.
