Micrapate humeralis is a species of auger beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae. Adults are typically small, cylindrical insects ranging from 3 to 5 mm in length, possessing a dark brown or reddish-brown coloration that blends well with tree bark.

The defining morphological feature of this beetle is the enlarged, hood-like pronotum that obscures the head from above, which is a common trait among all members of the Bostrichidae family. This structure serves as a protective shield and an anchor while the beetle bores into wood.

The larvae are white, C-shaped, and possess specialized mandibles designed for excavating wood. They spend their entire developmental cycle within the woody tissues of the host, feeding on xylem and pith until pupation occurs inside the tunnel.

Adult beetles are proficient flyers and are particularly active during warmer months, seeking out suitable hosts for oviposition. Their robust bodies and strong legs allow them to navigate complex surfaces and crevices in tree bark.

Understanding the life cycle is crucial for effective control, as the majority of the beetle's life is spent concealed within the host plant, making chemical contact extremely difficult during the larval stages.

Damage is primarily caused by both adults and larvae. Adults bore into young twigs and branch forks, creating galleries that compromise the structural integrity of the branch, often leading to snapping under wind pressure.

Larvae consume the inner woody tissue, creating an intricate network of tunnels that interrupt the plant's vascular system. This disruption prevents the normal transport of water and nutrients, resulting in gradual tree decline.

Heavily infested plants exhibit canopy dieback, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in fruit yield. In young saplings, such damage can be fatal, as the tunneling can effectively girdle the main stem.

The presence of the pest also promotes the establishment of secondary infections, as the open tunnels provide an ideal environment for wood-decay fungi and opportunistic bacterial pathogens to colonize the plant.

Signs of infestation

The most reliable sign of an infestation is the appearance of small, circular holes on the surface of the bark, which indicate where the beetles have entered or emerged from the branch.

A fine, powdery substance known as frass, consisting of wood dust and larval excrement, can often be found accumulating around these entry holes or at the base of the infested branch.

Visible signs of plant stress include the wilting and yellowing of foliage on specific branches. In advanced stages, these branches appear desiccated and brittle, often breaking off unexpectedly.

Inspecting the cross-section of a removed branch will reveal extensive, irregular galleries. These tunnels are often packed with debris, distinguishing them from the galleries of other wood-boring pests.

During the peak flight season, observant growers may notice adult beetles congregating on the bark, especially during dusk or dawn, when the insects are most active in their mating and colonization efforts.

Control measures

Cultural management is the primary defense, starting with the prompt removal and disposal of infested branches. Burning or chipping wood waste is essential to prevent the emergence and spread of the next generation.

Ensuring trees remain vigorous through proper irrigation, fertilization, and site management is vital. Healthy trees are better able to resist colonization and can often compartmentalize minor infestations.

Chemical control, if necessary, should be timed with the adult flight period. Applying persistent contact insecticides to the bark during peak emergence can prevent new eggs from being laid on the host.

Preventative measures, such as applying lime wash to tree trunks and main branches, can act as a physical deterrent, making it difficult for adult females to find suitable crevices for oviposition.
