The red-horned bostrichid (Sinoxylon ruficorne) is a beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae. Adults are small, measuring 4–6 mm in length, with a cylindrical body shape and a pronotum that covers the head like a hood, which is characteristic of the family.

The beetle typically appears dark brown to black, with reddish-brown antennae, which is the origin of its common name. The elytra (wing covers) are punctuated, and the posterior end is flattened with small teeth used to excavate tunnels in woody tissues.

The larvae are typically C-shaped, legless, and white with a hardened head capsule. They are specialized for boring through dense wood, possessing strong mandibles adapted for continuous tunneling within the branches and trunks of host trees.

Due to their cryptic lifestyle, these beetles are rarely seen on the surface. Identification is often confirmed by the shape of the entry holes and the patterns of the tunnels, which are distinct enough to distinguish them from other wood-boring insects.

Their biological success depends on the condition of the host. These insects are particularly attracted to drought-stressed or otherwise weakened trees that have lower sap pressure and impaired defense mechanisms.

What it damages

The red-horned bostrichid is a destructive pest of various deciduous trees, with a strong preference for fruit crops like apple, pear, peach, apricot, and cherry. It also thrives on various ornamental and forest species including oak and elm.

The damage is caused primarily by adults and larvae boring into branches and trunks. This tunneling disrupts the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the dieback of infested limbs.

Severe infestations can result in the structural failure of the tree, especially in younger saplings that cannot withstand the mechanical damage caused by the galleries. Once a tree is infested, it often exhibits reduced vigor and productivity.

Furthermore, the holes created by the beetles serve as entry points for pathogens, including wood-decaying fungi, which can exacerbate the internal rot and speed up the decline of the host tree.

In commercial orchards, this beetle can cause significant economic losses by necessitating the removal of affected trees and reducing the overall lifespan of the orchard if left unmanaged.

When it appears

Adult beetle activity peaks during the warmer months, typically from late spring through mid-summer. During this period, the beetles emerge to mate and seek suitable sites for egg-laying on the bark of host trees.

The life cycle is closely linked to climatic conditions. In warmer, arid climates, the beetle can complete multiple generations within a single growing season, leading to rapid population growth and increased pressure on host plants.

Larvae develop throughout the summer, continuously feeding on the inner bark and sapwood. This feeding activity is hidden from view, as the beetles remain inside the tunnels they create to protect themselves from predators and harsh weather.

Pupation occurs inside the woody tissue, often deep within the galleries. The resulting adults emerge by boring circular exit holes, marking the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next infestation phase.

Overwintering typically happens at the larval or adult stage, protected inside the tree. This resilience allows the species to persist in various environments, even during periods where the host tree is dormant.

Signs of infestation

The most common sign of infestation is the presence of small, perfectly circular entry holes on the bark, usually about 2 mm in diameter. Fine sawdust, or "frass," is often found near these holes, collecting in crevices or on the ground below.

Wilting of foliage on individual branches is a strong indicator of internal damage. If a branch suddenly loses leaves or dries out during the growing season, it is a sign that the vascular tissue has been compromised by beetle tunneling.

Peeling back the bark may reveal intricate galleries packed with frass. This is a definitive sign of colonization, as the larvae leave behind a clear trail of destroyed wood tissue while they feed.

In mature trees, you might observe localized bark cracking or exudations of sap, which are the tree's natural but often insufficient attempt to seal off the damaged areas from the invaders.

Finally, a thinning crown and the overall loss of tree health are indicators of long-term or severe infestation. If these symptoms appear, it is essential to inspect the trunk and main branches for signs of beetle emergence holes.

Control measures

The foundation of management is sanitation. Dead or severely infested branches should be pruned promptly and destroyed, preferably by burning, to eliminate the brood developing inside the wood before adults emerge.

Maintaining high tree health is crucial for long-term prevention. Regular irrigation and proper nutrition help trees maintain the vitality necessary to resist colonization attempts by the bostrichids.

Chemical control is most effective when targeted during the adult flight period. Protective sprays can prevent the beetles from settling and boring into the bark, protecting the tree during the most vulnerable months.

Monitoring using baited traps can help determine the timing for interventions, ensuring that pesticides are applied precisely when the adults are most active, thereby reducing the environmental impact.
