Cebrionidae is a family of beetles belonging to the superfamily Elateroidea. These insects are characterized by a distinct sexual dimorphism, where males are typically winged and capable of flight, while females are wingless and spend most of their life cycle within the soil. Due to their secretive lifestyle, they often go unnoticed until significant crop damage occurs.

The larval stage of the Cebrionidae family is responsible for agricultural damage. These larvae are soil-dwelling, subterranean feeders that possess strong mandibles adapted for chewing roots and the underground stems of plants. Their appearance is somewhat similar to wireworms (click beetle larvae), making them difficult to identify without entomological expertise.
The life cycle of these beetles is complex and prolonged, often spanning multiple years. Eggs are deposited directly into the soil, where the developing larvae spend their instars feeding on the root systems of various host plants. This extended underground developmental phase makes them resilient to changing environmental conditions and agricultural interventions.
Damage caused by Cebrionidae includes root pruning and destruction of the root crown, which disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients. Infected fields often exhibit patches of stunted, wilting, or dead plants. In addition to direct feeding, the wounds created by the larvae provide entry points for soil-borne pathogens, potentially leading to secondary fungal or bacterial infections.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to pest control. Cultural practices such as crop rotation and frequent mechanical soil cultivation (plowing) are essential to disrupt the larvae's habitat. For high-density infestations, chemical control methods, including seed treatment with systemic insecticides or the application of granular insecticides at sowing, are recommended to protect vulnerable seedlings during the germination phase.
