Apate terebrans is a beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae, commonly known as auger beetles or false powder-post beetles. The adult beetle is characterized by a cylindrical body, typically ranging from 15 to 25 mm in length, with a dark brown or black coloration that blends into tree bark.

The most distinctive morphological feature is the pronotum, which is strongly hooded and covered with small, rasp-like teeth. This structure effectively hides the head, providing the insect with a rugged, drill-like appearance suited for boring into wood.

The larvae are cream-colored, curved, and possess robust mouthparts capable of excavating extensive tunnels within the host plant's stem or branches. Pupation occurs within these tunnels, shielded from external environmental threats.

Native to tropical regions, this species is highly active in warm climates. They are notorious for their ability to bore into healthy, living woody tissues, which distinguishes them from many other wood-boring insects that only target dead or dying wood.

The life cycle is cryptic, with adults being primarily nocturnal. They emerge at dusk to feed and find mates, making early detection of an infestation challenging for plantation managers and farmers.
