The Capuchin beetle (Xylopsocus capucinus) is a member of the Bostrichidae family, often referred to as auger beetles or false powderpost beetles due to their wood-boring nature.
The name stems from the shape of the pronotum, which is extended forward and covers the head like a hood, resembling the attire of a Capuchin monk. The beetles are typically dark brown or black.
Larvae are white, curved, and possess strong mandibles capable of pulverizing tough woody tissues. They reside deep within the wood, which makes them difficult to target during the early stages of the life cycle.
Taxonomically, they belong to the order Coleoptera. Their specialized physiological traits allow them to thrive in varied woody environments, ranging from healthy standing trees to seasoned timber.

Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and adequate irrigation is a key preventive measure, as healthy trees are significantly more resistant to beetle attack.
