Taxonomically, they belong to the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are typically medium to large in size, often possessing soft elytra and vibrant warning coloration. Their biology is marked by a complex developmental process known as hypermetamorphosis, which often involves a parasitic stage, distinguishing them from most common agricultural pests.

These beetles are known for causing significant damage to a wide range of crops. They often congregate in large groups, feeding on vegetables, legumes such as alfalfa, beans, and soy, as well as potatoes and various ornamental plants. By voraciously feeding on leaves, flowers, and buds, they can defoliate entire patches of crops in a very short period, leading to substantial yield losses.
