In terms of systematic position, the Ciidae family is part of the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Their morphology is characterized by a cylindrical body shape, which enables them to move efficiently through the tunnel networks they excavate within the tough, woody textures of fungus fruiting bodies.
The damage caused by Ciidae primarily involves the destruction of fungal tissues. While they are generally considered beneficial in forest decomposition processes, in specific agricultural or silvicultural contexts, they can become pests when they consume beneficial fungi or damage wood-based substrates in research or industrial production settings.
The life cycle of these beetles is completed entirely within the host fungus. Females oviposit into the tissue, and larvae hatch and consume the fungal interior, creating a network of galleries.
