How to identify

The Rough borer (Micrapate scabrata) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are typically 3–5 mm long, with a cylindrical, dark brown or blackish body.

A key diagnostic feature of this family is the pronotum, which is strongly hooded, covering the head. This anatomical adaptation allows the beetle to use its thorax as a shield while boring into hard woody tissues.

The elytra are characterized by a rough, rugose surface with small tubercles, which provides a matte appearance. This morphology is an adaptation for navigating the tunnels created within the wood.

Larvae are white, C-shaped grubs with well-developed, strong mandibles. They are highly specialized for living inside plant tissue, where they create galleries by feeding on the xylem and phloem.

Identification often relies on the observation of specific entry holes and the associated frass (sawdust), as the adult beetles spend most of their life cycle hidden deep within the wood.

What it damages

The Rough borer primarily targets stressed or weakened trees, fresh logs, and branches of various orchard crops, including vines. Both adults and larvae contribute to the damage caused to the plants.

Adult beetles bore entry holes into the bark and cambium, disrupting the plant's vascular system. This disruption severely affects nutrient and water transport, leading to localized dieback of branches.

Larvae tunnel deeper into the wood, creating extensive galleries packed with fine wood powder. This internal destruction compromises the structural integrity of branches, making them prone to snapping.

In nurseries, infestation can be devastating, as it can kill young saplings by girdling the stems. The destruction of the transport tissue effectively starves the developing plant above the point of entry.

The pest is also a significant concern in agricultural storage, where it can infest wooden crates or structural lumber, facilitating the spread of the beetle to new locations via commercial transport.

When it appears

Adult beetle activity typically begins in the late spring, once temperatures remain consistently above 15-18 degrees Celsius. This is the period when they emerge to mate and locate suitable host plants.

The females deposit eggs in bark crevices or mechanical injuries. Warm, stable weather conditions during early summer favor rapid egg-to-larva development and infestation success.

The life cycle involves an extended period of larval development within the wood, which protects the immature insects from environmental fluctuations and many natural predators.

By late summer, the larval stage is usually completed, and the insect prepares for pupation. Overwintering occurs primarily at the larval stage deep inside the wood galleries.

Monitoring for adults should be performed throughout the warm season, as late-emerging individuals can continue to infest trees well into the autumn before dormancy begins.

Signs of infestation

The most prominent sign of an infestation is the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface of branches, often resembling pinpricks or drill marks.

Fine, powdery sawdust (frass) visible at the base of the tree or on the surface of branches indicates that active boring is occurring inside the wood.

Affected bark may show signs of discoloration, longitudinal cracking, or weeping (gummosis) as the tree attempts to combat the invasive damage from within.

Progressive wilting of specific branches, often occurring during the peak of the growing season, is a major symptom that the vascular integrity of the plant has been compromised.

Internal inspections often reveal intricate galleries filled with fecal matter and wood shavings, which is the definitive clinical sign of Micrapate scabrata activity.

Control measures

Sanitation is the most effective management strategy: prune and destroy all infested branches and wood scraps immediately to eliminate potential breeding sites.

Maintaining high horticultural standards, including proper irrigation and soil nutrition, helps trees remain resilient, making them less attractive to boring beetles.

In cases of heavy infestation, insecticide applications during the adult flight period can reduce populations and protect healthy trees from initial colonization.

Removing dead wood and logging debris from the vicinity of orchards is critical to minimizing the presence of reservoirs for the pest.
