Endecatomidae

Endecatomidae is a small family of beetles within the order Coleoptera, belonging to the superfamily Bostrichoidea. These insects are closely related to the well-known Anobiidae and Bostrichidae families, sharing similar structural characteristics and wood-boring habits that classify them as minor to moderate pests in specific environments.

These beetles primarily target weakened hardwood trees and certain species of wood-decay fungi. While they are often associated with the natural breakdown of dead timber in forest ecosystems, their presence in managed orchards or timber storage facilities can lead to economic losses by damaging structural wood or beneficial fungal crops.

The life cycle of Endecatomidae is entirely substrate-dependent. After mating, females deposit eggs into crevices of bark or directly into the fungal tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the material, creating complex galleries that remain hidden from view for the majority of their development stage, making early detection difficult.

The primary indicators of infestation include the appearance of small, circular exit holes on the surface of wood or fungal fruiting bodies. Internally, the larval feeding creates a dense accumulation of wood dust or frass. This structural degradation weakens the timber over time and can cause severe damage if populations are left unchecked.

Management strategies focus on cultural and sanitation practices. Removing infested logs, dead branches, and decaying fungal bodies is crucial to reducing population density. For high-value trees or storage wood, applying residual insecticides or wood preservatives can effectively deter egg-laying. Maintaining low moisture levels in storage areas further inhibits the success of larval development.
