How to identify

Sinoxylon senegalense belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae (auger beetles). These are small insects, typically measuring between 5 and 7 mm in length.

Adult beetles have a cylindrical body shape, colored in dark brown or black hues. The pronotum is well-developed and overhangs the head, giving the beetle a characteristic hooded appearance.

The elytra often bear small tubercles or spines, which are typical for this genus. Larvae are C-shaped, creamy white, with a significantly developed thoracic region.

The life cycle undergoes complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in bark crevices or directly into the wood surface.

Larval development takes place deep within the wooden substrate, where they consume the material, creating winding tunnels filled with fine wood dust known as frass.

What it damages

During peak activity periods, adult beetles may be observed on or near the wood surfaces, especially during dusk or nighttime when they are most active.

On living trees, signs of infestation include premature wilting of foliage, yellowing, and the localized death of branches housing the beetle colonies.

Control measures

The primary control measure involves timely sanitary felling and destruction of heavily infested trees, which act as reservoirs for the pest population.

To prevent timber infestation, wood must be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas, kept off the ground, and protected from contact with potential debris.

Applying insecticide-treated preservatives and fumigation of storage facilities are effective methods for managing populations in industrial settings.
