Systematic position: Longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) are a family of beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera. They are widely recognized by their characteristically long antennae, which often exceed the length of their bodies. Longhorn beetles

Crops damaged by the pest: Cerambycidae species have a broad range of host plants, including various deciduous and coniferous trees. In agriculture, they pose a serious threat to fruit orchards such as apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. They are also known to infest grapevines and ornamental shrubs, often targeting trees that are already weakened by disease, drought, or physical injury.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult females deposit eggs into cracks in the bark or small crevices they chew into the wood. The larvae, commonly referred to as round-headed borers, emerge and begin tunneling into the sapwood and heartwood, where they feed for one to several years before pupating.

Damage and pest impact: The primary damage is inflicted by the larvae. By excavating complex tunnels through the tree’s cambium and xylem, they sever the plant's nutrient and water transport systems. This leads to reduced vigor, branch dieback, and eventually the death of the tree. Furthermore, their entry points allow secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria to enter, accelerating the tree's decay.

Protection measures: Managing longhorn beetle infestations requires a proactive approach. Maintaining orchard health is the first line of defense; this includes removing dead or dying wood and keeping trees well-watered and fertilized to enhance their natural resistance. In cases of severe infestation, systemic insecticides can be applied to the bark during the adult flight period, or specialized treatments can be injected into the larval galleries to kill them in situ.
