Predaceous diving beetles

The damage caused by these beetles is primarily linked to their predatory nature. Both adults and their larvae, commonly referred to as "water tigers," possess sharp, biting mouthparts. They frequently attack fish fry and fingerlings, causing physical injuries to skin and gills, which can result in high mortality rates or susceptibility to secondary bacterial and fungal infections.

The life cycle of a Dytiscidae beetle includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically insert their eggs into the submerged tissues of aquatic plants. The larvae undergo several molts before leaving the water to pupate in damp soil at the pond margins, making their life cycle adaptable to various environmental conditions in water facilities.

The economic impact involves not only the direct loss of fish stock but also the potential damage to aquatic vegetation. By laying eggs in plant stems, the beetles can cause structural weakening and necrosis, which is detrimental to nurseries that specialize in the sale or propagation of aquatic flora.

Effective management and control measures include:

  • Routine pond drainage and drying to disrupt the pupation cycle.
  • Mechanical removal of excessive aquatic vegetation to reduce egg-laying sites.
  • Installation of fine-mesh screening on water inlets to prevent adult entry.
  • Biological monitoring to manage predator populations and maintain healthy fish stocking densities.
