Auger beetles

These pests target a variety of materials, including hardwoods, bamboo, and stored cereals like maize, wheat, and pulses. Unlike many other wood-boring insects, Bostrichidae prefer wood with relatively low moisture content, allowing them to thrive in structural timber, furniture, and processed grains stored in silos or warehouses.

The life cycle of Bostrichidae involves complete metamorphosis. Adult females bore into the substrate to lay eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow deeper into the material, creating tunnels packed with fine frass. The developmental time is highly temperature-dependent, and in optimal tropical or warm-storage conditions, they can produce multiple generations per year.

Damage caused by these beetles is characterized by round, clean-cut exit holes on the surface of the timber or grain kernels. The internal structure is often riddled with tunnels, leading to a significant loss of structural integrity in wood or severe nutrient loss in stored grains. The accumulation of fine dust (frass) under the affected area is a classic sign of infestation.

Pest management for Bostrichidae relies on integrated approach methods to prevent and control outbreaks. Essential strategies include:

  • Fumigation of warehouses and silos to eliminate active infestations.
  • Kiln-drying timber to temperatures that kill larvae and eggs.
  • Maintaining low moisture content in stored grains to inhibit development.
