These pests primarily infest stored grain, legumes, and the seeds of various forest trees. In field conditions, they often target damaged or decaying plant tissues, but in storage environments, they can transition to sound grains, causing severe economic losses by penetrating the seed coat and consuming the endosperm.

The life cycle of Anthribidae involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female oviposits into the host tissue. The emerging larvae are typically wood-borers or seed-feeders, creating galleries inside the plant material. The pupal stage also occurs within the host, providing protection from external environmental factors.

The damage caused by these insects includes weight loss in stored grains, reduced germination rates, and physical contamination. Because they often inhabit the interior of seeds, infestations can be difficult to detect until the adult beetles emerge, leaving characteristic circular exit holes on the surface of the grains.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control Anthribidae. This includes maintaining low grain moisture levels, implementing strict sanitation procedures in storage facilities, and utilizing fumigation when necessary. Regular inspections are vital to catch early stages of infestation before they spread throughout the storage unit.
